For the Glory of the Lord Jesus Christ

The Ten Commandments: Are they still relevant – Part 9

This series ended in Part 8 with this writer debunking the erroneous belief that some Christians have held as they continue to foster the belief that somehow God’s grace hides them and He doesn’t see them sinning.  God sees all, knows all; and our sins, transgressions and iniquities are not hidden from His eyes.

Luke 12:2-3 For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.  Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.

One major reason that this doctrine took hold in the church is due to Christians being taught how to displace and lower God from His Throne by believing that the High and Holy One is your Saturday morning coffee-drinking buddy.  What?  Yes.  If you were to take a poll and ask most Christians the question, “Do you fear God?”  The bulk of Christians would most likely tell you, “No! Oh, I respect Him, but I don’t fear Him.”  Let the question be posed, “Why not?”  If you know your Bible, you should already be guessing what Scripture is coming next…

Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

The footnote in the NIV describes the Hebrew word used for ‘fool’ as a morally deficient person.  Truly, if you are obeying God, then fear…true fear of His Highness and His Holiness has been cemented in your spirit and your soul and will even work itself out into your flesh.  Let’s look at what the very Son of God had to say on this subject, shall we?

Luke 12:5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

Verse 5 is in direct relationship to verse 1 in which the Lord Jesus warns His disciples to beware of the leaven or yeast of the Pharisees, which even just a little bit of their false doctrines that might be planted would spread throughout the whole lump of dough.  Some of the Pharisees plotted on how to get rid of anyone who threatened their power structures and most likely kept the general people under their control by threatening them with expulsion from the Temple and/or the punishment of being stoned to death.  Thus, do we then have the Lord Jesus teach on Whom they should truly fear, namely the One True God, who after He has destroyed something or someone has more power and authority and can command that you should be cast into Gehenna or hell.

It is almost a certainty that Christians allowed themselves to be talked out of the ‘fear of the Lord’ first and then God’s Laws soon followed.  As this writer mentioned previously, Christians in the 18th and 19th centuries lacked the fullness of this supposed knowledge that the High and the Holy One was supposed to be their buddy; strangely enough, they also lacked the knowledge that God’s Laws were to be relegated to the dusty relics of antiquity.

However, some have even argued that the ‘fear’ that is being talked about is not the ‘shaking in your shorts’ kind of fear, but that of deep respect.  Is that so?  This writer does not even have to lay a wager on this outcome: If God, the Creator, were to show up in front of you….how much would you care to bet that your knees would be shaking, you’d fall on your face as a dead person, your lips would be trembling and you’d be drooling on yourself.  You would most likely have to change your soiled clothes as well.  Furthermore, you would also lose your faculty of proper speech when trying to relate it to someone else; “buh, buh, buh, buh….God…buh, buh… He showed….buh, buh, UP!  Buh, Buh, Buh….yeah…buh… I didn’t FEAR HIM….we’re Buds!….yeah….”   One word will suffice….Liar!

Yes…this is where I will leave you…so ponder on this deeply, if you will.

We will continue this series in Part 10.  God Bless.
