Black Friday…now on Thursday?
And…they’re off!!! ‘Tis the Season…’ as the old clichés go and do they ever go. As a matter of fact, the Christmas season sometimes starts as early as July, as some stores set up promotional items or sections in their stores dedicated for‘Christmas in July’ while others actually have their stores set up for year-long Christmas stores. Stores are offering Pre-Black Friday deals this year and the parking lots have been full. While there are super deals at the major stores on Black Friday, there usually is only enough for the first five or ten lucky customers who reach the particular area first with outstretched hands grabbing away and victorious cries amid the throngs of other people shouting and doing the same.
But what would Jesus Christ do? Would we ever see the Lord Jesus hike up his robe showing off His newest and coolest buff Nike shoes, making a bee-line for the latest gaming gadget? This writer already knows what the Lord Jesus Christ would say!
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
The Lord would be more concerned about where we are placing our value systems. After all, will all of these prized sales items last forever? Of course not! At best, the average person might have them for a couple of years and then they either become obsolete or if there are children in the house, they just might get broken when they play with them. So wherever we believe our treasure is…there will our heart be also.
While our economy does need a shot in the arm, so to speak, it would probably do everyone a lot of good to keep our priorities straight and our own balance sheets in the black as well. Of course, it might be a little different this year and we will be shouting lay-a-way rather than charging on a credit card. The worldly name for the day after Thanksgiving has been tagged as Black Friday, which of course it received this moniker based on the sales figures that usually pulled a stores profits from the red into the black on their balance sheets. In my area, and I am pretty sure all across the USA, they are now opening the store doors….when? It has always been around 4 A.M. Friday morning which gave more weight to the idea of Black Friday…but this year they are opening the store doors….Thanksgiving Evening…8 P.M. Can we please keep our sanity?
But as this writer perused the pictures of past Black Fridays, the thought came and then the subsequent question was posed…Will the Lord Christ judge you as righteous if you’re first in line at your local super store and you managed to buy the latest and greatest gadgets?
Give thanks to God Almighty for the blessings He has bestowed upon us.
